A History Leason

Beenleigh Rum is the oldest known rum in Australia and was created by two English men John Davy and Francis Gooding, they gave up farming in England to try their luck in the new colony Australia, they settled on the banks of what is the Albert river today and called the area Beenleigh after their farm back home, Hence the suburb now of Beenleigh.

Rum is made of three ingredients :

Pure Queensland rainwater,
Premium molasses
Proprietary yeast

It is amazing how the distillers can turn these into magic.

The Tour

We went on the Distillery tour and the guide was a great young guy only been there a short time but was passionate about what he wanted to share with on the tour. Beenleigh Rum is unique in that it is still handcrafted with care and love. The process seems simple, but yet the magic is in the barrels, some of which are dated back to the original distillery in the late 1800s and now produce the Beenleigh White Rum, with its natural hint of vanilla from the vats. The tour takes about 30 minutes depending on the group size. The tour allows you to understand the simplicity of making the alcohol, but the complexity in making the rum, which they do exceptionally well.

The Rum

After the tour, we had a tasting of all the products on offer and I must say this rum is the best Australia produces, the variety is exceptional and each rum has its characters and place on your bar. The exception to the Rum is their vodka, soft with a hint of sweetness from the sugar cane.

The rums vary in age from the 2-year-old copper pot to the exceptional 10-year-old rum. The Beenleigh Double Barrel Rum was my favourite and is easy to drink on the ice no need to mix this little fella, the uniqueness and artisan approach by Beenleigh Artisan Distillery lets the rums be rums and needed with mixers but when you do it is quality spirit and a quality end product.

The tour and tastings were well run and everything was nice and relaxed and all the staff were knowledgeable. The tour we went on was AUD 25.00 for the tour and tasting and was well worth the money.

If you are a Bundy lover have a go at the other Queensland Rum, in my opinion, it is a far superior rum and enjoyable beverage.

So what rums do the have at Beenleigh

I have included a selection of the rums that I enjoyed at the tasting.

Copper Pot Distilled Rum

The copper pot is the entry-level of their rum, Aged in ex-brandy vats & finished in charred American oak barrels: the clever stuff happens in the custom-built still.

Tasting Notes

Australia’s original rum. Still pot stilled, the traditional way, before being craftily blended after a minimum of two years ageing in both ex-brandy vats and ex-bourbon barrels. Unmissable caramel undertones and pronounced vanilla notes, thanks to its time in oak, with a subtle infusion of floral elements from the ex-brandy vats. Well-crafted, well-balanced with and approachable style suited to simple mixed drinks and cocktails.

Bronze Medal, San Fransisco World Spirits Competiton 2016
Silver Medal, International Wine & Spirit Competition 2016
Best in the category – Gold Rum – Australia, World Spirits Award 2017

Beenleigh Double Cask

The double cask is my favourite of the rums at the price point yes the more mature rum’s are smoother and have more depth to them but this 5-year-old rum is one of the best I have had and easily consumed with ice as all rums are designed to be drunk this way.

Tasting Notes

With a delectable front palate packed full of caramel, spiced oak and toffee apple notes, this outstanding 5-year-old rum then gives way to its honey, oak and lingering floral characters. Handcrafted with the utmost care and precision, it has been expertly aged first in ex brandy vats then finished in ex-bourbon barrels. Resulting in a rich, golden rum that clings seductively to your glass allowing you time to savour every delightful nuance. We highly recommend you enjoy it neat or over ice.

Beenleigh Port Barrel Infused Rum

A rounded rum made even more delectable as it has been aged for 5 years in ex brandy vats and then spends it’s last 18 months in port barrels, giving the rum a muscat tone, however, they have been able to keep the sweetness under control. At $82.00 rrp it is an excellent buy.

Tasting Notes

Golden toffee hues. With subtle nutty aromas harmonise with sweet raisin, caramel, burnt toffee and subtle vanilla undertones. A mild sweetness that is balanced with rum and tawny flavours.
